It was in late 1977 that Chris Thompson came to the conclusion that due to be being disillusioned and dissatisfied with the Wado-Ryu organisation in the UK that it would be best if he severed all connections with them.
This meant that Chris Thompson was one of the first breakaways and one of the first Englishmen to formulate his own style, training and grading syllabus.

Some of the earliest origins of karate have been traced to the island of Okinawa n the Ryukyu Island chain. It is thought that a native style of self-defence developed here called 'te', or hand in English.
Okinawa is within close distance to the coasts of Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea thus there has been extensive influence from a number of Asian cultures in the subsequent history of this island.

Born in the Shimodate, Ibaragi Prefecture, Japan on the 1st June 1892, Hironori Ohtsuka was the second of four children who would listen to his mother's uncle, a Samurai Warrior, tell exciting tales as he taught him Jujitsu and marked the starting point of his life long fascination with the martial arts.

Born in 1868, Gichen Funakoshi is regarded as the father of modern karate.
It was at the age of 11 when Funakoshi was introduced to Azato and Itosu, two great masters of the time.
1917 and Funakoshi made an exploratory trip to Japan. His hope was to establish karate on the Japanese mainland. He have a demonstration of Karate-Jutsu to government officials from the upper classes. This meant that all the spectators were descendants of Samurai and unfortunately karate was seen to be nothing more than a set of exercises for street fighting without weapons.

Born in Shuri during 1889, Kenwa Mabuni was a descendant of one of the bravest warriors of Okinawan nobility.
Mabuni wanted to be so very much like his great ancestors, but as a child he was weak and sickly. In 1902 at the age of 13 he was introduced to the most famous martial artist in Shuri, Master Ankoh Itosu.
His family hoped that Itosu would be able to improve Kenwa Mabuni health and it is said that from that day onwards for almost seven years, Mabuni never missed a days training with Itosu.

Born on April 25 1888, Chojun Miyagi began his Karate training in Shuri-te and at the age of 14 was introduced to Kanryo Higaonna with whom he began his study of Naha-te. He studied with Higaonna for 14 years, becoming "uchi deshi" (live in pupil), fierce determination and severe training led to rapid progression.

The mission of Washinkai Karate is to promote a partnership between students and instructors so as to provide students with the opportunity to achieve their full potential in the study of karate-do, whether in the dojo, on courses, on a gasshuku or in competition, as well as to promote the art of traditional karate generally.
Kihon is the basic techniques of karate, kicking, punching and blocking. These fundamentals of karate must be grasped before a student can advance in karate.
Many good karate-ka (student) quit at an early stage due to the repetitiveness of kihon, however, if you take onboard the attitude of the Japanese that a house can only be built on a solid foundation then kihon is extremely important.

Washinkai has had an established Child Protection Team for many years. Born out of the belief that prevention is better than cure, Washinkai have implemented procedures to ensure that every child who trains within Washinkai is ensured a safe environment where they can enjoy and learn Karate.
