Last week, Jose Chulvi, Mayor of Javea and Juan Luis Cardona, Sports Councillor, presented over 125 medals to the younger members of Club Deportivo Washinkai Karate, in recognition of their dedication to karate this past year.
Lucas Muniz, Hari Hook, Stella Simons and Dylan Broadhead were selected to each receive a trophy as the most outstanding students of the year.The students, along with Ray Sweeney 4th Dan, Geovanny Sanchez and Sarah Lakin 2nd Dan, the three instructors of the club, also did a demonstration of karate in front of the Mayor, the Sports Councillor and a large audience.
They began with a show of simultaneous "kihon" (punches and kicks). The group of children from the Junior programme (under 12) gave a demonstration of breakfalls and self-defence techniques. Samuel Silva Bataille, Evy van Harmelen, Dylan Broadhead, Stella and Sisia Simons, Kyle Cochrane and Dani Vacas, all international kata champions, gave an exhibition of individual katas.
Next it was the turn of the team of Adam Sweeney, Taylor Brown and Lawrence Phillips, from the Senior Programme (12+) to present their Gold Medal winning kata, Sepai. Meanwhile, Lawrence Halls y Mike Hopkinson demonstrated the series of advanced defences which are required for their Black Belt exam, which they will be taking in three weeks time. The Gold Medal winning Washinkai Karate Adult Team of Geovanny Sanchez, Sarah Lakin and Hari Hook then executed their kata Sepai and showed it's Bunkai or application.
Finally, the youngsters punched and kicked their way through blocks of Wood up to 2 inches thick, putting an end to the demonstration with a huge round of applause from the audience.
Washinkai Karate is the largest karate club in the valencian community with over 160 students aged between 4 and 60 years.This week, with two free trial sessions included, Washinkai begin their Summer Programme for beginners in karate.
