pinoso-lucas-munisSarah Lakin and Geovanny Sanchez, both 2nd Dan instructors with Club Deportivo Washinkai Karate Jávea, took a group of ten younger students to take part in the XVI Villa de Pinoso karate Championships last weekend. The enormous number of entrants, around 700 from 37 clubs from all over Spain, meant that for 13 hours there was continuous action on all of the different competition areas.

There was a very high level of competitors from some of the best clubs in Spain but four of Washinkai's young students mounted the winner's podium.

Lucas Munis recieved the trophy for Male Kata Juvenil and Kyle Cochrane received his trophy for Male Kata Infantil. Charlie Macwhinnie won the 3rd place trophy in Female Kata Infantil whilst Dylan Broadhead also achieved 3rd place in Male Kata Infantil. Geovanny Sanchez, competed for the first time in the Male Adult Black Belt group against both Provincial and Valencian champions, passing through three fierce rounds of competition but wasn't lucky enough to be placed amongst the trophy winners.

The Russian female kata team attended the event and gave an incredible display of team kata.

Chief Instructor Ray Sweeney, 4th Dan, said, "We are very pleased with the results of the competition and everyone gave their very best. In fact, our team's performance was to such a high standard that the vice-president of the Valencian Karate Federation has arranged for the Selector of the Valencian Community Karate Team to come down to the club next month to do a weekend of training with us to have a closer look at our students."

Club Deportivo Washinkai Karate meets regularly in Colegio el Arenal, Xàbia International College, Laude Lady Elizabeth School and in Javea Sports Centre.
