35 medals for Javea club in 2011 championshipsClub Deportivo Washinkai Karate of Javea travelled to England on the 4th March to participate in the 2011 British Traditional Karate International Championships. Instructors Ray Sweeney 4th Dan, Geovanny Sanchez 2nd Dan and Sarah Lakin 2nd Dan took a party of 16 students and 17 parents and were delighted when they won a total of 35 medals including 16 golds.

Karate competition is divided into two parts, Kata and Kumite. Kata is an artistic presentation of moves demonstrating defence and counter attacks against an imaginary opponent. Team Kata is a group of three students performing in a simultaneous display team. Kumite is free fighting and the ultimate test of a karate student’s skills.

Alba Vives of Laude Lady Elizabeth Club (LLES) was the first competitor of the day and took 4th place in the under 10 years old kata event. Amazingly, CD Washinkai went on to take the top 5 places in the event with James Boyle from Xabia International College (XIC) winning the Silver with Sisia and Stella Simons (LLES) winning Bronze and Gold respectively. Evy van Harmelen (XIC) came 5th in the event but unfortunately wasn’t placed in the medals. The Under 16 White to Yellow Belt Category saw 11 year old Kyle Cochrane of Colegio el Arenal (CeA) win the Gold and (LLES) Sam Silva aged 10 from LLES, the Silver.

The under 16 Blue Belt category was dominated again by Washinkai with Aidan Marshall (11) taking Gold, Dylan Broadhead (10) winning Silver and Cassie Middlemiss (11) from Alfa y Omega, winning Bronze.

The under 16 and up to Black Belt category was also a clean sweep for CD Washinkai with Lawrence Phillips (CeA) in first place, Taylor Brown (XIC) in second and Adam Sweeney (XIC) winning Bronze.

The adult event was decisively won against a very strong field by Hari Hook of LLES.

Instructors Sarah Lakin and Geovanny Sanchez joined Hari for the Adult Team Kata event and demonstrated Sepai kata and its applications in the finals and took the Gold with the team consisting of Valerie Boyle, Hannah and Cassie Middlemiss winning Bronze in the same event.

Incredibly, CD Washinkai went on to win Gold, Silver and Bronze in every single Team Category including a silver for the team with Dani Vacas (LLES), Sam Silva and James Boyle.

The students have been training with Ray for up to nine years. Washinkai Karate now has over 150 students, ranging from 4 to 60 years of age, training in several clubs in Javea, Benitachell and Lliber.
