Why Do We Need Insurance?

Karate involves physical contact with other people in the practice of karate technique. Washinkai is not‘full-contact’ karate, and thus no techniques should be applied with full power to another karate-ka during training. Techniques are snapped or pulled.

However, accidents can happen, and a karate-ka who fails to exercise control and causes injury to another faces the possibility of legal action from the injured party. Damages for physical injury can be very high, and without adequate insurance cover such a claim could be financially crippling.

It is a requirement of the Governing Body that practitioners in their affiliated karate associations are properly insured. This is somewhat similar to the idea of Road Traffic insurance. It ensures that if any injury is caused, the injured karate-ka has a remedy, and that the one responsible for the injury is not financially ruined.

All members of the BTKA must have, without fail, a current Licence and Membership Booklet issued by the Association containing a current Governing Body insurance receipt issued by the BTKA. This document must be carefully preserved, as it contains not only the insurance receipt but also a record of gradings, dojo, course and competition attendances, and evidence of membership.
