In order to progress in karate a student must acquire both mental and physical self discipline. It is essentially this that will be examined in a grading. Certainly by the time a student reaches brown belt level, if this self discipline is not obvious in the student’s training he will be unlikely to make further progress. It is therefore important to cultivate the correct approach to training as early as possible.

It is the strengthening of mental resolution that is the most difficult, and the most valuable, skill to acquire. It is during periods of physical and mental exhaustion that this resolution is most tested.
